Native of Southern California, the Long Beach Museum of Art is pleased to welcome new and emerging artist, Sharif (Born 1993) this summer. A recent graduate of USC Roski School of Art and Design with a Bachelors degree in Fine Arts, Sharif joins LBMA as the Artist in Residence for the first time. Drawing creative influence from his cultural background and inspiration from his travels, Sharif will be transforming the Ralston Family Learning Center into a place of critical thinking and exploring art making in different media. Located on the lower level of the Hartman Pavilion, Museum patrons will have the opportunity to view and interact with Sharif about his process.

With an ongoing practice in ceramics, Sharif constantly pushes himself to discover and experiment with different materials. The core of Sharif’s work and practice is rooted in being constantly open to new ways of thinking, while approaching art as a platform for bridging diverse audiences. As a Muslim American, Sharif recalls being ostracized throughout his life for his upbringing and cultural background. The recurring feeling of alienation, for the artist, reinforces the notion of continuing to create work that can be accessible to and resonate with a wider audience.
