The Long Beach Museum of Art is pleased to present Rafael Soriano: The Artist as Mystic on the work of Cuban-born painter Rafael Soriano. This special exhibition with nearly 100 paintings, drawings and pastels by the acclaimed master of geometric abstractions traces Soriano’s entire career, from early abstractions painted in Havana to his translucent late style created in his Florida exile.

The Long Beach Museum of Art is the only west coast museum to present The Artist as Mystic during its national tour.

Accompanied by a bilingual English-Spanish catalogue with contributions from American, Cuban-American, and Cuban scholars, The Artist as Mystic opened at the McMullen Museum of Art, Boston College, in January 2017. Artist as Mystic will be on view at the Long Beach Museum of Art until October and then travels to the Patricia and Phillip Frost Art Museum at Florida International University. Finally, the exhibition will be shown at the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Havana, Cuba in March 2018. The exhibition in Havana will be supplemented with early Soriano works from the MNBA permanent collection and will be the first time works created by Soriano while living in exile will be shown in his native land.

Organized at the McMullen Museum of Art Boston College in collaboration with the Rafael Soriano Foundation, the exhibition has been curated by Elizabeth Thompson Goizueta, a faculty member in Boston College’s Department of Romance Languages & Literatures. Major support has been provided by Boston College and the Patrons of the McMullen Museum. The accompanying exhibition catalogue is published by the McMullen Museum of Art and edited by Elizabeth Thompson Goizueta.
