More about About Landing Page

The Long Beach Museum of Art has always been located at 2300 E. Ocean Blvd in Long Beach. It was built as a summer house by Elizabeth Milbank Anderson in 1911. As one of Long Beach’s oldest structures and a fine example of California Craftsman Bungalows, the Anderson House mansion and its two-story Carriage House showcase the early development of residential neighborhoods in Long Beach. After serving various roles, including as the Navy’s Chief Petty Officer Club during World War II, it became the Municipal Arts Center in 1950, born from community efforts to create a space for showcasing contemporary art.

The Museum is a nationally recognized, community-focused art institution that owns and maintains a permanent collection of over 4,300 art objects spanning all media and cultures and covering three centuries of American, European, and international art. Along with a lively schedule of rotating exhibitions, the Museum specializes in California art, California modernism, art created by Southern California women since the 1950s, early 20th-century European art, decorative arts, and fine crafts.

In 2019, the Museum opened LBMA Downtown, the sister location of the Museum’s main campus in Downtown Long Beach, in the heart of the East Village Arts District. The historic art campus brings greater opportunities to engage with new and emerging artists, gallery exhibitions, and arts-focused educational programming for local students.

Accredited by the American Association of Museums, engagement with art is central to everything we do, and our calendar of events provides innovative art experiences for visitors of all ages. These include family-friendly art-making programs, thought-provoking talks and artist conversations, K-12 gallery tours, inspiring summer and membership events, and more.

With a blend of historic and contemporary, traditional and modern, there is always something surprising to discover at the Long Beach Museum of Art!

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

At its core, the Long Beach Museum of Art is committed to advancing cultural equity and inclusion on its Museum campuses, in programming and in the regional arts community.

This commitment comes from a central value held by the Museum: the belief that it is an inherent right of all human beings to have a broad access to meaningful, engaging and joyful arts expression and experience. As an institution operated through a public-private partnership between the City of Long Beach and the Long Beach Museum of Art Foundation, LBMA strives to be a home for a multitude of cultures, communities, and identities. We define culture in inclusive terms without regard to race/ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, national origin, age, disability status, religion, and class and indigenous heritage. These values deeply inform the formulation of the Long Beach Museum of Art Vision and Mission, and guide us as we critically examine the way equity is fostered in our practices and organizational culture.

The Long Beach Museum of Art Foundation Board leadership and staff acknowledge it is critical to include these practices throughout the fabric of the Museum to advance equity. The commitment is infused in all areas of the organization’s efforts. The Long Beach Museum of Art will strive to fulfill its commitment to cultural equity and inclusion.

This statement was adopted by the Trustees and staff of Long Beach Museum of Art Foundation and has been a guiding light.
